Nabors Industries Employee’s Participation In Hurricane Harvey Relief Effort Receives Support From Tony Petrello

Businessman, Philanthropy

Nabors Industries is well-known for its charitable contributions to the Texas community. The company is always giving back in various ways to help the community by using its resources and its employees. During the 2012, Susan G. Koman Race for the Cure, Nabor’s Industries was a Silver sponsor to raise the awareness of breast cancer.

After the Hurricane Harvey devastation, the employees stepped up to help along with their CEO Tony Petrello. Hurricane Harvey’s force came into the Gulf with such power that it leveled homes and displaced many families leaving them without any essential care items and necessities. The need within the recovery efforts was in high demand.

The 1,200 employees pulled together to raise small donations. CEO Tony Petrello became aware of their desire to help the community and accepted the challenge of matching each of their donations. With a matching donation, the employees were able to raise over $170,000 for helping those who were in need.

This type of contribution is not unprecedented for Tony. While in college, Tony established a bond with his Yale University mentor Professor Serge Lang, a renowned and respected mathematician. When Professor Lang passed away, Tony arraigned a $150,000 endowment fund honoring his mentor and subsequently matched an additional $150,000 that the alumni contributed.

Over the years, Tony has provided contributions to Aids research, homeless shelters, creative arts and supported education programs through scholarships. He founded the Petrello Family Foundation which provided $3 million in scholarships to the Houston youth aspiring them to attend higher education. Nabors Industries also has a mentor program in partnership with the Aldine Independent School District. As CEO, Tony is promoting passion for the next generation of leaders through education activities and programs.

Tony, and his wife Cynthia, were gifted with their daughter Carena who was born prematurely and with cerebral palsy. Carena is now eight years old. After the diagnosis, they found there wasn’t much access to neurological research in Texas. Their $7 million donation to Texas Children’s Hospital paved the way for the Jan and Dan Research Institute to be built. The research and testing facility is aiding in the advancement of developing treatment for neurological diseases.

As the highest compensated CEO in 2015, Tony’s contributions to the community are among his greatest achievements. Tony earned $27 million in 2015 which has been a great resource for being able to give back in ways that are at the core of his mission to serve the community.

George Soros Embraces Role as Progressive Leader and Icon

Investment Guru, Philanthropy

What does it mean to stand up for what you believe in? What does it mean to have principles that last a life time? George Soros, founder of the Soros Hedge Fund and Open Society Foundations, has lived those two questions out via his actions over the past 60+ years. George Soros is a prominent billionaire who has a life story as interesting as anything you’ll ever read. If you haven’t heard of him much before be prepared to get familiar with his name. The 2016 presidential election, as wild as it was, brought George Soros out of his semi-retirement. From the ashes of the weirdest year in politics rises one of the most important voices in the progressive party.George Soros and Donald Trump stand at two polar opposite ends of the human spectrum. George Soros is a self made billionaire who has spent his entire life trying to empower people to pursue democratic ideals that consist of social justice, inclusive behavior, the arts, transparent government and so on.

Donald Trump inherited generational wealth and is as well known for getting sued as he is for his work as a reality TV star.Somehow these two men stand across from one another on the highest stage in the world of politics. Donald Trump is, obviously, the face of the Republican party while George Soros is back to be the voice and engine for progressive values.Soros works closely with his adviser Michael Vachon in order to deliberate their next moves. When Soros and Vachon saw what was going on during the 2016 election they were both just appalled with what they saw. Vachon notes the level of hostility between the two major parties was just something that he had never seen before. Vachon says, “This year the political stakes are exceptionally high.”

Those stakes grew even higher when Trump gained serious mobility as the nominee thanks to his brutal rhetoric, divisive comments, and off the cuff boorishness that somehow rang true with today’s GOP. At the end of the day what spurred Soros’s political action was the fact that he stands opposite of Trump on major issues: criminal reform, religious tolerance and immigration.George Soros has become a boogeyman to conservatives because he is one of the few billionaires willing to put his money down to see his ideal candidates get enough support to make a run at office. During the election this past year Soros donated over $25 million to progressive PACs including Hillary Clinton’s own political action committees. While Hillary ultimately fell short during the election season, albeit not without potential Russian collusion, Soros’ investment was well worth it — the progressive party is back and ready to fight for what is right.

George Soros rises to become greatest philanthropist of modern age

Human Rights Foundation, Philanthropy

George Soros was born in Hungary in 1930. Growing up amid a rising tide of anti-Semitic nationalism, Soros’ father had the perspicacity to change his family’s last name to Soros from the Jewish surname Schwartz. This turned out to be a crucial move, one that would ultimately save the entire Soros family from near-certain death at the hands of Nazis and their extermination camps.

However, many of Soros’ extended family was not nearly so fortunate. Many of his aunts and uncles obstinately chose to remain in the country and openly declared their own Jewish heritage. This quickly brought them to the attention of Nazi commissars, who ended up sending many of them to concentration camps. Many of the brothers and sisters of Soros’ parents were never seen or heard from again. Know more on CNBC about George Soros.

This was a seminal period in the young Soros’s life. It instilled in him a deep need to understand the roots of nationalism run amok and the ways in which malignant political movements could be stopped before they had a chance to build to the fevered crescendo that nearly destroyed all of Europe in its entirety during World War II.

At first, the young Soros had no idea that he would ever end up becoming one of the greatest capitalist in the history of the markets. In fact, Soros had absolutely no desire to accumulate personal wealth, nor any inclination towards investing in the stock market. It was not until he had attended the London School of Economics, where he studied under the famous professor of philosophy Karl Popper, that Soros begin to see the benefits of accumulating vast wealth, especially for those who were philanthropically and civically minded. Soros slowly came to see the acquisition of wealth not as an end in itself, but as a means to accomplish the broad scale civic and society-wide goals that he felt were necessary to the survival of open societies.

It was only shortly after taking the helm of his own hedge fund, Soros Fund Managment, that George Soros founded his first philanthropic organization, which is still functioning today, The Open Society Foundations. The foundation has been dedicated to changing the political environment throughout many countries in the world. These include many of the former Soviet satellite states, in some of which Soros has been nearly single-handedly responsible in toppling the despotic regimes that oversaw them. But it has been in the United States where Soros has received possibly the most attention for his intrepid willingness to wade into contentious areas of the political arena. Throughout the last few years, Soros has waged a one-man campaign to reform the criminal justice system from the ground up. This strategy has involved the replacement of local sheriff’s, judges and prosecutors, which Soros rightly perceived as holding some of the most potent keys to the reformation of the criminal justice system that produces the highest incarceration rates in the world.

Dick DeVos Work History

Business, Philanthropy

Dick DeVos is a well-known entrepreneur and businessman from Michigan and a son of one of the Amway Corporation co-founders. I set out to check his work history and resume from his early days of his career up until now where he runs his own firm. DeVos is an alumnus of the Northwood University where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He is also an attendee of the Harvard Business School as well as the Wharton School’s Executive Study Programs, though he did not graduate. In 1974, Dick DeVos began working with Amway Corporation. At the corporation, DeVos held a series of positions in various departments such as marketing and sales, finance, development, and manufacturing. He became one of the executive vice presidents of the firm in 1984. As one of the vice presidents, Dick DeVos was charged with the responsibility of managing the corporation’s interests in over 18 nations.

During DeVos’ stretch, he facilitated the opening of various new markets for the company and subsequently increased the sales levels to a point where, for the first time, they surpassed the domestic sales. I noted that when he assumed the vice presidency of foreign operation in 1986, the company had only 5 percent foreign sales of the total sales. Six years later, the time he left the position, the foreign sales had increased to around 50 percent of the overall annual sales. The DeVos family, in 1991, made a significant acquisition of the NBA’s Orlando Magic basketball franchise where he went on to becoming its Chief Executive Officer and President. He held the position for three consecutive years and was responsible for significant success.

Dick DeVos would later leave the Orlando Magic in January 1993 and rejoin Amway Corporation as its President. He was his father’s successor who was among the co-founders of the firm. During his tenure in the presidency, Dick DeVos expanded the firm’s operations to more than 50 countries on six continents. In 2000, Dick DeVos oversaw one of the significant restructurings, which led to the creation of Amway’s new parent company, Alticor, as well as some subsidiaries. Through buyouts and early retirements, the company downsized its workforce to enable it to return to profitability. Dick DeVos later retired from Alticor in August 2002, which reported sales worth $4.5 billion. Moving on, Dick DeVos went to become the President of Windquest Group. Dick DeVos has also been a member of the State Board of Education where he was actively involved in a series of community initiatives.
