Whitney Wolfe: Warrior for Women

Businesswoman, CEO, Entrepreneur

Whitney Wolfe of Austin, Texas, is founder and CEO of a billion dollar company with an app called Bumble, which was launched in December of 2014. The app is a dating app which by itself is pretty commonplace, but the twist with Bumble is the built in empowerment for women. Women are in control of making the first move with identified matches, and if the woman is just not interested and makes no contact within twenty-four hours, the match disappears. The idea caught on quickly, and the app was downloaded 100,000 times within the first month, with the average user spending about an hour a day on the app. Now, four years later, Bumble is the fastest growing dating app in the country, with more than thirty-five million users currently. Andrey Andreev, founder of the dating app, Badoo, partnered financially with Whitney Wolfe in the start-up of Bumble. He contributed ten million dollars, as well as the use of some of the technology and software needed to launch the app. Andreev owns around eighty percent of the company, and Wolfe around twenty percent.

The ideas for resources to empower women just keep coming for Whitney Wolfe. In 2016, Bumble BFF, an app intended to help women find friends became available. In 2017, Bumble Bizz was launched, an app to help women network and meet other career women. In addition to all the new app ideas, the company has focused on hosting events that target the advancement and empowerment of women.

The success of the female focused company has brought much recognition to Wolfe. In 2018, she was named to Forbes “30 Under 30” list. She has also been featured on the cover of several financial magazines, including Forbes. Wolfe will no doubt continue to enjoy accolades for her continued success with Bumble.

Whitney Wolfe met her own match back in 2013, on a ski trip in Aspen. Staying true to her beliefs, rumor has it she made the first move to further the relationship after being introduced by a mutual friend. In 2017, Whitney married Michael Herd in Italy, becoming the perfect example of the possibilities she promotes through Bumble.
